Copyrighting Your Texts

This applies to any text from an entire novel to a small paragraph of advertising copy or song lyrics.

First, type in the name of the text you are copyrighting where it says:-

Enter the Title of this Project

We recommend that you do not type directly into the intelLoc text box. If your Internet connection is interrupted midway, before you save your text, then you will probably lose it. Use your computer first and save your work as a document.

The best format to use is a simple word processor such as Wordpad on PC or TextEdit on a Mac. These should remove formatting which is an unnecessary element in the copyrighting of your all-important creative work – the words.

If you have written in a Word document to a Pages template, then simply highlight the text you want to copyright and paste it into Wordpad or TextEdit. This will normally take out the formatting other than paragraphs, which is ideal for your copyrighting purposes.

Then hit ‘Ctrl A’ on a PC or ‘cmd A’ on your Mac which will highlight your text. By hitting ‘Ctrl C’ or ‘cmd c’ which will copy the text to your computer’s clipboard. Place the cursor inside the text box in your intelLoc dashboard and hit ‘Ctrl V’ or ‘cmd V’ and it will be pasted in ready for copyrighting.

Important:

Don’t try to paste images into the text box. You can upload one image at a time at the bottom of the text box before or after pasting in your text. The image will be saved under the same copyright verification number and included in your copyright certificate.

Book:

First, type in the name of the text you are copyrighting where it says:-

Enter the Title of this Project

We do not advise uploading an entire book for a very good reason. When you create your intelLoc Copyright Certificate, the text that you upload will be included from the second page of the certificate onwards. So if your book is 90,000 words long, then similarly, your certificate will run to (say) 250 – 400 pages long!

That’s simply too big a file to send by email should your copyright be stolen. We therefore suggest you upload only the first pages of your creative text – i.e. the text you have actually created as opposed to the title pages, foreword, chapter list and so forth.

Example: if you’ve written a novel called ‘A Tale of Two Cities’, then just upload page 1, or part of page 1, e.g. —

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only."

This way, your certificate will be no more than 2 – 3 pages in length – and the copyright verification number will be displayed clearly.

Advertising Copy:

First, type in the name of the product you are copyrighting where it says:-

Enter the Title of this Project

Simply paste in your copy as in the above example. If the advert is on Amazon, eBay, Easy or any other commercial site, then it’s a good idea to paste in all the copy as this is very often used illegally by other, competing users of these sites.

Song or Rap Lyrics & Poetry:

First, type in the name of the song or poem you are copyrighting where it says:-

Enter the Title of this Project

Paste your lyrics or verse as detailed above. All you need is the lyrics, not your name or any other details as these are automatically included in the certificate when you hit ‘CopyRight Now!’

Image Upload Notes:

Type in the name of the image where it says:-

Enter the Title of this Project :

It’s not necessary to include any text if copyrighting images, but you can (for example) include where you uploaded the image, say to your Amazon or Etsy sales page.

Make the image you want to copyright as small as possible. The quality of the image, photo or design is irrelevant. But do make sure it’s clearly recognizable! The smaller the image, the faster it will upload and it will send easily in an email.

The only formats you can use are jpeg, or gif. If you can’t make these formats on your computer, go online and search for ‘convert to jpeg (or gif) online free’. There are plenty of free sites where you can do this.

Simply go down below the text box and hit ‘Choose file’ and upload it.

Music Upload Notes:

First, type in the name of the piece, arrangement or song you are copyrighting where it says:-

Enter the Title of this Project

You can upload your songs, arrangements, jingles, as an mp3 file only.

If you have lyrics, include them in the text box and they’ll be copyrighted under the same copyright verification number.

Video Upload Notes:

First, type in the name of the movie you are copyrighting where it says:-

Enter the Title of this Project

Don’t try to upload a video file here! Video files are massive and it’s completely unnecessary to upload them for copyrighting.

Simply go to the site where your video is published, YouTube or Vimeo for example, and highlight the url in the address bar at the top.

Copy that address and paste it into the text box below the name

You can also take a screenshot of the opening scene of your video and upload that as an image to further discourage the illegal use of your movie.
